One of PC gaming's most influential stealth games is returning. In a press release on November 2, Nightdive Studios, Eidos-Montréal and Atari announced that Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will launch on December 3 for PC and consoles.

What's included

The remaster is built on Nightdive's KEX Engine, the same technology behind the studio's other remasters of PC classics. According to the announcement, the release includes:

  • Thief: The Dark Project, Looking Glass Studios' 1998 original.
  • The additional missions, content and updates from the 1999 Thief Gold re-release.
  • The Tarnished Mirror, an all-new narrative campaign.

The Tarnished Mirror

The biggest surprise is the new campaign. It was made by the creators of Thief: The Black Parade, which the press release calls "one of the most ambitious fan-made expansions in PC gaming history." Nightdive says The Tarnished Mirror is designed to feel immediately familiar and serves as a bridge between Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age. It introduces new factions, new environments and Lovecraftian horror, and it's built using the remaster's own technology and visual language.

Having a fan team's work become part of an official release is rare, and the companies describe the collaboration as "a rare industry moment."

Platforms, editions and price

On PC, the game is coming to Steam, the Epic Games Store and GOG, according to Gematsu's report on the announcement. Console versions are also planned.

Two digital editions are available to pre-order:

  • Standard Edition: $29.99
  • Digital Deluxe Edition: $34.99, which adds a remaster diary with artwork, the soundtrack and a novel preview

The Steam store page lists the game at $29.99 with a December 3, 2026 release date. Physical editions, including a Steelbook and a "Deluxe Trapezoid" edition that recalls the original's big box, are also available to pre-order.

Why it matters for PC players

Thief helped define stealth in games by turning light and sound into core mechanics, and it remains a landmark of late-1990s PC design. Nightdive's track record with remasters makes this a release worth watching, and The Tarnished Mirror gives veterans something genuinely new rather than just a visual refresh.

With December 3 less than a month away, it's one of the more interesting PC releases of the holiday season.
