Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is out on PC. Activision's PC overview set the launch for October 23 at midnight local time on Steam, Battle.net and the Xbox app on PC, while the Steam store page lists the release date as October 22. Players who pre-ordered digitally got early access to the campaign starting October 16.

This year's campaign is set during a war on the Korean Peninsula, which Steam's description says begins when North Korea launches an invasion "that threatens to destabilize the world."

Developed for PC by Beenox

As with recent Call of Duty games, the PC version was led by Beenox in partnership with Infinity Ward. Activision says the game offers more than 800 customization options across graphics, gameplay, input devices and the interface, and it automatically configures settings based on your hardware.

System requirements

Activision published these official specs:

Minimum

  • Windows 10 64-bit (latest update)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i5-6600
  • 8 GB RAM
  • AMD Radeon RX 470, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 / 1060 or Intel Arc A580, with 3 GB of video memory
  • 115 GB of storage – SSD required

Recommended (for 90 FPS in multiplayer on High settings)

  • Windows 11 64-bit (latest update)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i7-8700K
  • 16 GB RAM

Secure Boot and TPM 2.0

The most important detail for some PC players is security. Activision's RICOCHET anti-cheat includes hardware-based protections such as TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, and the Steam page warns that "Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 must be enabled to play some or all parts of this game." Most modern PCs support both, but older systems or custom builds may need changes in the BIOS before the game will run fully.

Features worth checking

  • Upscaling and frame generation: NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR Redstone, Intel XeSS 3 and Filmic SMAA T2X.
  • Enhanced FOV (PC only): uses lens effects to widen the field of view near the edges of the screen without changing the center.
  • Ray tracing in Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ.
  • HDR10+ support and split World and Weapon Depth of Field settings.
  • Sub-frame mouse polling for more precise aiming.
  • A built-in benchmark tool that reports average FPS, CPU and GPU data, ping and input latency.
  • Advanced Shader Delivery, which provides precompiled shaders. Activision recommends installing the Xbox PC app ahead of time, whichever store you buy from, so shaders can be delivered at install.

Price

When we checked Steam on November 6, Modern Warfare 4 was listed at $69.99 for the standard edition.

Why it matters

Modern Warfare 4 is the biggest shooter launch of the fall, and its PC version is unusually feature-rich. Just make sure your system meets the Secure Boot and TPM requirements – and has 115 GB free on an SSD – before you buy.
