Steam keeps growing. On Sunday, October 11, 2026, Valve's platform reached 43,505,724 concurrent users, a new all-time record according to SteamDB figures reported by Dot Esports and ThinkComputers.

Logged in vs. actually playing

It's worth understanding what the number measures. The record counts accounts logged in to Steam at the same time, not just people playing games. Users browsing the store, chatting with friends or simply leaving the client open in the background all count.

According to SteamDB figures cited by ThinkComputers, about 14.46 million users were in a game at the time of the peak. That's still an enormous number, but it shows why the headline figure should be read as a measure of Steam's overall reach rather than active play.

The games behind the peak

According to Dot Esports, several games helped drive Steam activity around the record:

  • Counter-Strike 2 posted a 24-hour peak of more than 1.4 million players.
  • Dota 2 also topped 1 million players at its 24-hour peak.
  • AION 2, NCSoft's free-to-play MMORPG, launched globally on October 5 and reached an all-time peak of 397,905 concurrent players.
  • Valve's in-development hero shooter Deadlock has reached an all-time peak of more than 260,000 players.

The mix is telling. Long-running free-to-play games still provide Steam's baseline, while big new releases push the platform to new highs.

Why it matters

Steam's growth matters beyond bragging rights. A larger audience makes Steam an even more important launch platform for developers and raises the stakes for competing PC storefronts and launchers.

For players, it's a reminder of how dominant Steam remains on PC – and that the busiest times on the platform also tend to be the busiest times for matchmaking in your favorite games. If you're curious about Deadlock, see our coverage of its latest Ranked season.
