Marvel Rivals vs. Apex Legends: Which Free Hero Shooter Should You Play on PC?
Both are free, both are built around heroes with unique abilities, and both are on Steam. Here is how Marvel Rivals and Apex Legends differ in format, pace and team play.

Hero shooters give every character a unique kit of abilities, and two of the biggest on PC are free to play: Marvel Rivals from NetEase Games and Apex Legends from Respawn Entertainment. They share a genre label, but they are built for very different kinds of matches.
The format: arena vs. battle royale
Marvel Rivals is a 6v6 objective-based shooter. Two teams fight over points and payloads on compact maps, and matches are a series of team fights from start to finish.
Apex Legends is a battle royale. Many squads drop onto a large map, gather weapons and gear, and fight until one team is left. You spend more time moving, looting and positioning, and every fight can end your match.
Heroes and roles
In Marvel Rivals, characters fall into three roles:
- Vanguard – front-line characters who protect the team
- Duelist – damage dealers
- Strategist – support characters who heal and buff
Specific hero combinations unlock Team-Up abilities, which rewards coordinated team building.
In Apex Legends, each Legend has a passive, a tactical and an ultimate ability. Roles exist, but gunplay matters more: weapons are found on the map, and good aim and movement often decide fights.
Pace and skill
Marvel Rivals is about ability timing and team coordination. Fights are frequent, and you respawn during a match, so mistakes are less costly.
Apex Legends is faster in movement – sliding, climbing and ziplines are central – but slower in rhythm, with quieter stretches between intense fights. Elimination is permanent unless your squad brings you back.
Communication
Apex Legends is known for its ping system, which lets you mark enemies, items and locations without voice chat. It makes playing with strangers much easier.
Marvel Rivals relies more on team composition and ability combos. Coordinating ultimates with your team makes a big difference.
Destruction
A notable feature of Marvel Rivals is destructible environments – parts of the map can be broken, opening new sightlines during a fight. Apex Legends maps are mostly static, with the play zone shrinking over time instead.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Marvel Rivals if you want constant action, team play and Marvel characters.
- Choose Apex Legends if you prefer high-stakes battle royale matches, gunplay and movement.
Both are free on Steam, so trying each one costs nothing but time. Looking for another free battle royale? Fortnite is a very different take on the genre, with optional building.
