No Man's Sky's tenth anniversary year keeps going. On October 28, Hello Games released FORSAKEN, a Halloween-flavored update that, according to the studio's announcement, "allows players to explore the darker side of the universe." It follows last month's COSMOS update, which overhauled space.

Salvaging the spooky parts of the galaxy

FORSAKEN sends players looking for rare haunted tech and biological horrors. You'll find them in the eeriest places in the game: derelict hulks, abandoned freighters, planetary dig sites and infested outposts.

Those mementos attract a new group of enigmatic collectors. Trade with them and you can unlock biomechanical corvette modules for creepy, organic-looking ship exteriors, new cockpits and an interior set inspired by a distant galaxy. Dedicated scavengers can also earn a larva tank helmet and a grub cannon multi-tool.

More than a Halloween event

Hello Games says FORSAKEN is "particularly crammed with new features," and several are long-requested quality-of-life improvements:

  • Postal missions, which turn you into an interstellar delivery driver.
  • A radial menu for weapon selection.
  • A minimal HUD mode.
  • Seamless warping to nearby stars: lock on to one of the brightest stars in the sky and fly there directly, without opening the galaxy map.
  • Dozens of accessibility tweaks.

Seamless warping in particular changes how short-range exploration feels, removing a menu step players have repeated thousands of times over the years.

Now on iPhone and iPad

FORSAKEN also marks the launch of No Man's Sky on iPhone and iPad, including all 40-plus updates. Hello Games says iPhone 11 and newer, plus third-generation iPad Air and newer, can try the beginning of the game for free. It's a separate release, but it shows how far the game has come since 2016.

Five major updates in one year

According to Hello Games, FORSAKEN is the team's fifth major update of the anniversary year, after REMNANT, XENO ARENA, THE SWARM and COSMOS. All of them are free for existing owners.

Why it matters

No Man's Sky remains one of the best examples of long-term free post-launch support on PC. If you haven't played since before COSMOS, the combination of a reworked space layer and FORSAKEN's quality-of-life changes makes this a good time to return.

It's also cheaper right now: when we checked the Steam store on November 6, No Man's Sky was 60% off at $23.99, with the discount ending November 9. See our PC deals page for current prices.
