Helldivers 2 Swaps GameGuard for Easy Anti-Cheat and Adds Poisonous Noxious Terminids

Arrowhead moved Helldivers 2 to Easy Anti-Cheat on October 20, warning that some mods may break. Two weeks later, a new Noxious Terminid strain brought poison and webs to the bug front.

Helldivers 2 has had a busy few weeks on PC. Arrowhead Game Studios replaced the game's anti-cheat software in October, and on November 3 it introduced a dangerous new enemy type on the Terminid front.

Goodbye GameGuard, hello Easy Anti-Cheat

In an announcement on October 20, Arrowhead said Helldivers 2 was moving from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) that same day, together with "additional security measures to crack down on recent cheat mods that have been circulating."

The studio was unusually direct about why. It said its GameGuard implementation "wasn't as effective as it could have been" and described EAC as an industry standard used in more than 200 games. Arrowhead also said some players had gone as far as manipulating the Galactic War itself, which affects the shared story every player takes part in.

The post also addressed modding. Arrowhead said it appreciates "the creativity behind cosmetic and non-gameplay mods" and acknowledged that mods are "part of the DNA of PC gaming." However, it warned that:

  • Mods that give unfair advantages or affect other players may no longer work.
  • Some harmless cosmetic mods may need updates from their creators to keep working.

If you use cosmetic mods on PC, check with the mod authors before assuming something is broken for good.

Meet the Noxious strain

On November 3, Arrowhead's Ministry of Truth briefing introduced the Noxious Terminid strain, along with an expansion of bug caves to more biomes – "from scorched deserts to frozen tundras."

Noxious Scavengers look like regular Scavengers but are faster and inflict poison with every bite. They're fragile, so Arrowhead recommends weapons that favor volume over precision, such as shotguns, flamethrowers and grenades.

Noxious Spewers are the bigger problem. Unlike ordinary Spewers, they move quickly, and they're responsible for the webs now covering battlefields. Their Web Spit stops you from sprinting. Their heads have medium armor, but their web-filled abdomens are unarmored – shoot that sac, though, and it bursts in a Web Explosion that snares every nearby Helldiver and bug.

How poison works

A new HUD icon tracks poison. Being lightly poisoned blurs your vision and slowly drains health. Heavily poisoned Helldivers take more damage over time and lose the ability to sprint. Stims cure the condition, so Arrowhead suggests rationing them carefully.

Why it matters for PC players

Anti-cheat changes are always sensitive on PC, especially in a game with an active modding scene. Arrowhead's approach – targeting gameplay-affecting cheats while openly tolerating cosmetic mods – is a reasonable balance, but it puts the burden on mod creators to keep up. Meanwhile, the Noxious strain gives bug-front veterans a reason to rethink loadouts that rely on precision weapons.
